House for a Chef | Wallington
This rural home is composed of three sequential gabled forms, connected by a continuous blackbutt pergola. The pergola becomes a unifying element, linking the primary dwelling with the pool house, shed, and external kitchen, while establishing a consistent rhythm across the site.
Extending beyond circulation, it also wraps the pool, forming a subtle boundary that provides privacy without enclosure. Over time, this structure will be softened by a climbing grapevine, shifting with the seasons and adding a layer of change to the otherwise robust material palette.
As chefs, the clients placed strong emphasis on the kitchen as the centre of the home. Conceived as a commercial-grade workspace, it is balanced with a more refined materiality—dark timber and raw concrete creating a functional yet considered environment.
The main living space is defined by an expansive vaulted ceiling, giving a sense of volume and openness at the heart of the plan. This space extends directly to the alfresco, supporting a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living.
Throughout the home, framed views and carefully placed openings create quieter moments that draw in the surrounding landscape, reinforcing the relationship between the built form and its rural setting.
